The Lovely Little Village of Povlja on the Island of Brac
Povlja is a lovely little village in a cove that bears the same name. It is situated on the northeast coast of Brac and is 10km to the east of Sumartin, a ferry port on the island of Brac which connects to the city of Makarska. The people of Povja’s main occupations are vine growing, farming, olives, fishing and tourism.
Centuries ago Roman galleys were anchored off of Povlja and for those interested in archaeology there are several archaeological sites to be found in and around Povlja. Remains from the early Christian period include parts of a ChristianBasilica built sometime between the 5th and 6th centuries.
The local parish church has an interesting octagonal baptistery with a Cupola; this is the only one of its kind preserved in Croatia and is still an integral part of the church. You can also find partly preserved frescoes there dating from the same period.
In 1250 AD an inscription was made by Master Radovan which he chiselled on to one of the lintels of the structure. This is today seen as a highly valuable work of art as it is said to be the oldest known example of a Western Cyrillic script in the whole of Croatia, you can find this and other archaeological items at the “Archaeological Museum” in Split.
Povlja itself is surrounded by some fabulous beaches and bays there is also a safe harbour. If you like to play sports and like to have an active holiday experience there are tennis courts and a football field to utilize. If you enjoy water sports and other water based activities then you are in for a treat as you can choose from sailing, diving or surfing. There are also some other attractive places not to be missed at Povlja, Supetar, Selca, Sumartin and Postira.
