Free Things to Do With Kids in San Diego – The Top Ten List

August 24th, 2009

It’s so much fun having kids. It’s a great excuse to do the things you used to do as a kid all over again. But, as you know, it’s expensive enough taking care of their basic needs, and there isn’t always much money left over for entertainment. So I’ve compiled a list of the top 10 free things to do with kids in San Diego:

  1. Listen to a giant outdoor organ. Concerts are held at Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park every Sunday at 2 p.m.
  2. Star gaze through a large telescope. Held the first Wednesday of each month, the San Diego Astronomy Association sets up telescopes outside of the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. It’s on the north side of the building by the large fountain. Viewing starts at dusk.
  3. Build a snowman. Yes, it does snow in East County San Diego. Drive up to the quaint former gold-mining town of Julian when it snows and let the kids play. It’s a great place to get delicious apple pie and hot cider, too (neither of which are free, but they won’t set you back too much unless you’re feeding a busload or the like.) And if your kids like art, browse through some galleries and check out the library there for a taste of the local art.
  4. Rollerblade the boardwalk. Or skateboard, bike, walk, or run. The Mission Beach Boardwalk is 3 miles long and perfect for exercising and people watching.
  5. Have a bonfire. Nothing exemplifies California beach life more than an evening beach bonfire. Only a few beaches in San Diego allow for bonfires, though. Check out Coronado Beach, Mission Beach, La Jolla Shores, and Moonlight Beach in Encinitas.
  6. Explore the tide pools. Point Loma and Swami’s Beach in Encinitas are locally famous for their tide pools. Only go at low tide or else you will need a snorkel.
  7. Learn and play at the New Children’s Museum. Admission is free for everyone on the second Sunday of the month.
  8. Visit the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum. This is a free museum that houses over 25 vintage aircraft and lots of aviation memorabilia. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm.
  9. Visit the Coronado Library. If ever there was a library for kids, this is it. Puppet shows, story times, a tiny gazebo, and a running toy train are some of the attractions of this special library.
  10. Hang at the Gliderport. Watch the hang gliders and paragliders launching from the Gliderport near Torrey Pines.

If you don’t feel like driving all over San Diego, just take your kids to one of the 33 beautiful San Diego beaches. If you bring shade, sunscreen, snacks, and toys, you have a ready-made all day outing. Depending on how old your kids are, you may even get a little rest and relaxation there yourself.
