HCM City–Can Tho–Phu Quoc air route opened

Vietnam Airlines launched its first air route from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong delta city of Can Tho and Phu Quoc island on March 28 at the Can Tho international airport.

Vietnam Airlines will offer passengers five flights a week, on every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, using the ATR-72 plane.

The new route will help create favourable conditions for trade promotion and meet the travelling demand of the Mekong delta’s residents.

It will also shorten the flight distance between the Mekong delta region and other domestic and international regions.

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the liberation of South Vietnam and the new route opening, Vietnam Airlines offers passengers with a discount price of VND 304,000 (US$ 18) for each route from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho, Can Tho to Phu Quoc and vice versa from March 28 to May 30.

HCM City closes nominations for ‘Saigon 100E’

Nguyen Hue Flower Street is one of the nominations for Saigon 100E.

The organization committee for “Saigon 100E” has closed nominations, with suggested activities now placed in ten categories, said HCM City’s Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism September 23.

The city will then choose 100 interesting activities and specialties after receiving votes and then promote them.

There are ten Top Ten categories: hotels, Vietnamese restaurants, transportation services, Vietnamese cuisine, Vietnamese specialty foods, destinations, shopping sites, tours, entertainment venues and outstanding events.

The program aims to value and highlight the city’s unique, attractive and prestigious tourism products for domestic and foreign visitors.

The total funding for this program is VND2.7 billion (US$150,000), paid from a fund for tourism promotion and the city’s budget.

Up to two thirds of the total funding will pay for advertising activities.

The program will be advertised on 40 large TV screens placed in Tan Son Nhat International Airport and tourist destinations in HCM City, on posters, pamphlets, websites, books, DVDs and USB-sticks.

Le Quoc Khanh, deputy director of the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said around 2000 4GB USB-sticks containing information about HCM City and its tourism will be sent to 1000 foreign travel agencies around the world.

The vote will be opened on October 1, and can be accessed via the website: www.hcmc100e.info and flyers at the airport, hotels and shopping centers.

Each group will have 15 dominations.

The results will be announced at the end of this year.

HCM City airport monitors rogue taxis

VietNamNet Bridge – Tan Son Nhat International Airport has started to tighten controls on airport taxis to make life easier for travellers.

The move came after a flood of complaints about rogue airport taxis who have been troubling passengers, said Phan Le Hoan, director of the airport’s Terminal Ultilisation Company.

The company re-arranged parking places, increased supervision and tightened management to make sure they are not able to cheat passengers, he said.

At a meeting with representative of more than 10 airport taxi firms, airport authorities asked taxis to manage their operations better.

“The company will also work with police to impose heavy punishments on violators and will forbid them from operating at the airport in the future if they violate new rules,” Hoan said.

Deputy chief inspector of HCM City’s transport department Le Hong Viet said the department was working with airport authorities to map out inspection plans for the next week so that violations can be handled speedily to protect passengers.

Chief inspector of the department Le Vinh Phat said that taxis which disturbed the peace and failed to show a business licence would be fined between VND200,000 and 2 million (US$11-117).

Violators might also have their vehicles confiscated and their business licence revoked depending on the severity of the violation, he said.
