Vietnamese artist enters 2nd round of contemporary art contest

Four sculpture and installation artworks named “Living Fossils” by Vuong Van Thao passed the first round of the Asia-Pacific Breweries Foundation Signature Art Prize 2008 for contemporary artists in the region.
Covering Hanoi’s ancient houses with composite, Vuong Van Thao tries to render the existence of the past and the present.
He said: “I’m very happy that my works passed the first selection. As a Hanoian, my works are about this old city. I feel that all ancient houses in Hanoi are sculptures and artworks and I want to create a museum to preserve them and preserve a city which is about to celebrate its 1,000th anniversary.”
This contest is co-organised by the Asia-Pacific Breweries Foundation (APB) and the Singapore Art Museum (SAM).
A jury which includes famous international artists chose 10 of 34 works sent from 12 Asian-Pacific nations.
In mid October, the jury will announce three prizes the audience worth SG$10,000 and a first prize worth SG$45,000.
